Snk̛míp Dig Deeper

Snk̛míp Dig Deeper is a feature-length documentary that begins with a simple wetland restoration project and evolves into the uncovering of a much deeper truth—the site’s history as an ancient Indigenous village.
Co-directed by Autonomous Sinixt Matriarch Marilyn James and settler conservationist Lorna Visser of the Valhalla Foundation for Ecology, the film chronicles the transformation of an ecological project into a profound journey of cultural reconnection, reconciliation, and land-based responsibility.
As the restoration work progressed, it became clear that the land was once home to a thriving Sinixt village. What followed was an unexpected and deeply challenging collaboration between settler conservationists and Indigenous peoples. Though the Canadian government declared the Sinixt “extinct,” they are in fact very much alive and active in their territory. The film explores the ongoing challenge of reconciliation within this context.
Filmed over six years in Sinixt tmxʷúlaʔxʷ (traditional territory), Snk̛míp Dig Deeper offers a rare and moving view into Indigenous-led protocols, ecological restoration, and the urgent work of decolonizing conservation. With a custom-composed score, breathtaking scenery, humour, and deeply human moments, this film reminds us why restoring both the land and relationships with the First Peoples is vital.
Admission by donation. A discussion will follow the screening.
All are welcome to attend and take part in this important conversation about what it means to be responsible stewards of the land today.
